The Society’s Spring Conference will take place on Saturday, 3 May 2025 at the Wynd Centre, Paisley.
Speakers and topics will include:
- Denis Rixson – ‘Some interesting Renfrewshire place-names.’
- Peter McNiven – ‘Place-names and the dating of settlement and peat
clearance on the Carse of Stirling.’
- Carole Hough – ‘Berwickshire and beyond: Old English in Borders place-names’.
- Iain Mac an Tâilleir – ‘Gaelic names in Gaelic orthography from OS
name book in Highland / Lowland border counties’
- Michael Ansell – ‘Machrikil and Kilkerran: a case of saintly
misinterpretation’ - Maggie Scott – ‘Real and fictional place-names in 21st century literature’.

SPNS 2025 AGM
The conference will be preceded by the Society’s Annual General Meeting. All members are welcome to attend. The materials to be discussed at the AGM, including a voting form for those who cannot be there in person, will be posted on the AGM page of the SPNS website in due course (a link will appear here).
STUDENT TRAVEL BURSARY - CULTURAL CONTACTS FUND
Travel grants of up to £200 may be available for helping students who have been invited to speak at SPNS conferences, or who will be presenting papers on Scottish onomastic topics at international conferences.
